Green Party councillor Mark Dearey from Louth has been nominated for the Seanad seat left vacant by Déirdre de Búrca.

Ms de Búrca resigned from the Seanad ten days ago after a row with the party over their failure to secure a post for her in the Cabinet of European Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.

Mr Dearey is regarded as one of the Green's best hopes for an extra Dáil seat in the next election.

He was elected to Dundalk Town Council in 2004 and to Louth County Council last June.
