Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has revealed that his wife has undergone surgery for cancer.
Speaking at a party selection convention in Belfast last night, Mr Adams said he and his wife Colette received news of the diagnosis a month ago.
He told the convention it was a huge shock, but the operation last Thursday went well and his wife was in good spirits.
Mr Adams said: 'I want to take this opportunity to thank the medical and health staff and our own doctor for their good work.'
There were no other candidates standing and he was unanimously selected to represent Sinn Féin in the constituency at this year's Westminster elections.
