Clonmel - Woman died following fire

A man has gone on trial in connection with the death of a 55-year-old woman in a house fire in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, in 2007.

Ann-Marie O'Neill died on 27 April that year after a blaze at her house in Elm Park, Clonmel.

Jason Murphy, 36, from Elm Park, denies manslaughter in relation to the death of Mrs O'Neill and also denies two counts of arson.

His trial opened this morning at Clonmel Circuit Court and is expected to take about a week to complete.

The prosecution alleges that at around 5.30am in the morning, Jason Murphy set fire to the O'Neill's car, which was parked two feet from their front door.

The fire then spread through the front door and into the house, according to the prosecution.
