A manufacturing company has launched a medication for patients with chronic kidney disease on the Irish market.

The treatment is made in Waterford by Genzyme and is set to secure and possibly help increase the number of people employed there, which currently stands at 450.

Genzyme is one of the major biotechnology success stories of the past decade.

The US multinational set up a manufacturing base on the outskirts of Waterford city nine years ago.

It has invested €400m in the facility since it opened. The products made there are used by patients in over 50 countries.
