About 50 passengers were forced to exit a train via ladders in Northern Ireland after a train broke down near Ballymoney, Co Antrim, this morning.

The incident, which saw passengers stranded for two hours, happened on a train travelling from Belfast to Derry.

A mechanical failure caused the onboard heating system to close down.

Translink, the company which runs the service, said ladders were needed because of the distance between the train doors and the railway track.

A Translink spokeswoman said: 'The 6.50am service from Belfast to Derry was delayed this morning due to mechanical difficulties.

'We apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused.'

The passengers were eventually transferred to a replacement bus service.
