An army bomb disposal team has carried out a controlled explosion on a device found close to a house near Longford town this afternoon.
The remains of the device have been taken away for technical examination.
An army spokesman later confirmed that the device was viable.
The Dublin to Sligo road was closed for a short time while the device was being investigated but has since re-opened.
The device was discovered at the front gate of the house on the Edgeworthstown side of Longford town.
