Aer Lingus and Ryanair have announced plans for increased services from Cork this summer.

Aer Lingus has announced eight new routes from Cork airport for its summer schedule with new services to Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey, La Rochelle, London Gatwick and Tenerife.

The airline says a total of 140 weekly departures will operate from Cork to the UK and Europe, an increase of 44 flights a week.

Six of the new routes - to Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol, Glasgow, Jersey and La Rochelle - are being operated by Aer Lingus Regional.

Aer Lingus Regional is a new franchise arrangement between Aer Lingus and Aer Arann which was announced last week.

Ryanair has also announced plans for seven new routes from Cork Airport this summer.

The airline also said it would base one extra plane at Cork Airport for the summer months of June, July and August.

Ryanair's new Cork routes are to Alicante, Barcelona (Reus), Bordeaux, Faro, Lanzarote and La Rochelle.

It says the routes will deliver an extra 40,000 passengers to Cork in the three-month period.
