Toyota Ireland says it is trying to find out how many of its vehicles sold in Ireland have faulty accelerator mechanisms.
The company says the models and numbers of potentially affected vehicles should be known by the middle of next week.
The Irish announcement comes after Toyota was last week forced to recall 2.3 million vehicles sold in the US because of reported accelerator problems.
The company has now said the recall will be implemented in Europe as well.
Toyota has had 30 reported cases of sticking accelerators across Europe, none of which resulted in accidents.
In a statement this evening, a spokesperson for Toyota Ireland said it has no safety concerns about its cars while it tries to find out the extent of potential accelerator problems here.
The company have also said they were notified of 11 instances of accelerator pedal problems in the the last year, all of which were dealth with individually.
