A proposal to build a new gas-fired power station on the site of the old ESB plant in Ferbane, Co Offaly, has gone before a public hearing of An Bord Pleanála.

The new 350-megawatt plant is designed to support a wind farm development and would create 500 jobs in the construction stage if it goes ahead.

However, there have been 86 submissions to Offaly County Council and An Bord Pleanála about the development.

An Bord Pleanála is due to announce its decision on 10 March.
