Ireland's main cities are getting dirtier, according to a survey conducted by Irish Business Against Litter.

However, the group also that found there has been a dramatic improvement in the cleanliness of Irish towns.

Limerick city and Wicklow town were designated as litter black spots.

Dublin city and Cork city were both branded as littered, while Galway city lost its Litter Free classification.

IBAL says a rethink on enforcement is required.

IBAL chairman Dr Tom Cavanagh said local authorities are simply not compelling businesses to keep the visible areas inside their property, such as car parks, clear of litter.

Meanwhile, Bray was today announced as the cleanest town in Ireland.

Seven years ago, only two towns of 60 surveyed were deemed to be litter free; the latest IBAL survey says 39 out of 60 are now clean.
