38 people were killed yesterday following clashes between members of rival factions of an Islamist sect in Nigeria
The violence escalated when security forces, who had been brought in to restore peace, engaged Kala-Kato sect members in the city of Bauchi.
Hundreds of residents who fled the fighting were returning to assess the damage when the fighting worsened.
Increased numbers of soldiers and police have since been deployed to key areas of the troubled Zango area.
During the clashes, Kala-Kato leader Badamasi Saleh Alkaleri was killed by security forces, police said.
At least seven houses, several cars and motorcycles were destroyed during the clashes.
In July at least 800 people were killed when security forces crushed an uprising in Bauchi, Kano, Yobe and Borno states in the Muslim-dominated north of Nigeria by members of Boko Haram, another radical Islamic sect opposed to Western education.
