33 dead in Nigerian city of Bauchi

33 people have died in clashes with military and police forces in the Nigerian city of Bauchi.

The Nigerian Red Cross said that the victims were mainly suspected members of an Islamist sect.

The police confirmed that 'an incident' took place in the city's Zango district but declined to give details.

'This afternoon, a military and police joint team invaded the Zango neighbourhood the group uses as its base and engaged them in a fight, killing 30,' said Nigerian Red Cross official Adamu Abubakar.

'We have so far evacuated 30 bodies of suspected members of the Kala-Kato sect to the morgue at the Bauchi Specialist hospital along with two bodies of soldiers and a policeman - making 33.'

Mr Abubakar said the attack centred on the house of the leader of the sect.

At least 800 people were killed in July when security forces crushed an uprising in Bauchi, Kano, Yobe and Borno states in the Muslim-dominated north by members of another radical sect, Boko Haram.
