African mediators are due to meet President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in a bid to end the political stalemate.

Morgan Tsvangirai had ceased cooperation with President Mugabe after his nominee for deputy agriculture minister Roy Bennett was arrested.

Mr Tsvangirai joined the unity government with his long-time rival Robert Mugabe in February, in a bid to end political violence and halt the nation's economic freefall.

Mediators, led by Mozambique Foreign Minister Oldemiro Baloi, are set to meet the two leaders.

The International Monetary Fund said yesterday that the Zimbabwe economy would likely grow by 3% this year after more than a decade of contraction but that the economic gains depended on political stability.
