Plans for Galway power station halted

Athenry - Application withdrawn
Athenry - Application withdrawn

Plans to build a controversial 200 megawatt power plant at Casla near Athenry in Co Galway have been halted following a decision by the company behind the project to withdraw a planning application for the new plant.

Constant Energy Limited withdrew the application this morning after Galway County Council issued a notice of its intention to refuse the gas-fuelled station planning permission.

It has one hour in which to make such a decision after the initial notice of intention to refuse planning permission is issued.

The plant was to be built on a 13-acre site close to an existing ESB substation.

Local residents strongly opposed the project on health and safety and environment grounds.

They rejected claims by Constant Energy Limited who insisted that it would be a clean industry.

This morning, the local residents group said it was relieved and delighted with the decision.

It was also welcomed by West Galway TD Noel Grealish who said gas powered plant was totally unsuitable for such a densely populated area and also given its proximity to local schools in Lisheenkyle, Carnmore and Cregmore.
