The Department of Health has moved to reassure the public about the safety of the swine flu vaccine, following concerns in Germany about a medicine which has been ordered for use in Ireland.

One German medical organisation has advised against using Pandemrix because of concerns about the safety of a booster substance used in it.

However Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said there was nothing to be worried about.

Yesterday, a fifth death from swine flu was confirmed in Ireland

The Department of Health confirmed that a male who lived in the east of the country died on Sunday. He had an underlying medical condition.

Globally, there have been at least 4,735 confirmed deaths from the virus.

However, despite the relatively low number of deaths, the World Health Organisation said last week that the virus remains a cause for concern because of its unpredictable nature.

It also warned that influenza activity in the northern hemisphere was much higher than usual this year.
