Pirates who hijacked a Chinese carrier in the Indian Ocean have threatened to execute its 25 crew members if a rescue operation is attempted.
The ship, named ‘De Xin Hai’ and carrying coal, according to China’s Xinhua news agency, was hijacked yesterday northeast of the Seychelles.
Qingdao Ocean Shipping Co Ltd reported the incident to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Centre.
The ship was en route from South Africa to India.
According to the European Union's anti-piracy naval mission EU NAVFOR, the ship was seized 550 nautical miles northeast of the Seychelles and 700 nautical miles off the east coast of Somalia.
