Transatlantic flights out of Ireland, Britain and Europe were disrupted today because of a problem with a computer system in the UK.

The National Air Traffic Systems in Britain said there was a fault within the computer system based in Prestwick that manages oceanic air space in the north Atlantic.

The space starts 400km west of Ireland.

The NATS said the problem started at 8am and any aircraft that needed to use that airspace was affected.

The Irish Aviation Authority said a number of flights leaving and arriving at Dublin Aiport were affected but some were using different flightpaths.

Passengers were advised to contact their airlines.

A spokesperson for the IAA said all flights that were in the air at the time of the technical failure continued their flights safely using a back-up emergency air traffic control system.
