58 dead after boat sinks in India

Rescuers have retrieved the bodies of 58 villagers floating in a river after a boat capsized during a storm in eastern India, officials said.

The boat was returning from a religious festival on Monday when it sank in the Bagmati River in Bihar state, 200km north of the state capital Patna.

The search continues in Bihar state to find at least 40 people still missing.

Officials had earlier said around 75 people were on board, but now believe the figure could be much higher given the fast-climbing body count and the number of missing.

'We have fished out 58 bodies, including 32 bodies of the children, so far and are searching for more bodies,' senior district official Satish Chandra Jha said by phone.

'Our search operation is still not over and it may continue till tomorrow, as we have been informed around 40-50 people are still missing,' he said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered an inquiry and announced compensation of $3,000 to each family of the dead.
