Minister for Health Mary Harney has said that next year will be the most challenging ever experienced by the health service.

Ms Harney told a conference on health funding in Dublin that cuts in 2010 would be considerable and that around €1.2bn needed to be saved.

The Irish Nurses' Organisation said the impact of the proposed cuts would be the downsizing of the health service by 15%.
