The visitor centre in the Co Meath town of Kells has closed due to lack of funding.
The centre, which has been open for the last ten years, has a copy of the Book of Kells with the original being housed in Trinity College Dublin.
It also has a copy of the Kells crozier, which is a mediaeval crozier that was found in a London cupboard in 1850 and is now housed in the British Museum.
The Chairman of the Town Council, Independent Councillor Brian Curran, said there were not sufficient funds to keep the centre open.
He said they hoped to contact Meath TD and Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey to lobby him for funds to re-open it.
However, the building itself requires a significant investment, including repairs to the roof and walls.
Talks are also under way between Fáilte Ireland and the council following the closure.
The tourism body gave a grant of around €800,000 to develop the centre as part of a ten-year agreement.
That deal still has another 18 months to run.
