The American man who swam across a lake to visit Burma's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be released tomorrow, according to a statement issued by US Senator Jim Webb.

John Yettaw had been sentenced to seven years hard labour.

Senator Webb today became the first US official to hold talks with junta leader Than Shwe and also held talks with detained opposition leader Ms Suu Kyi.

'Yettaw will be officially deported on Sunday morning,' Senator Webb's office said in the statement.

'Senator Webb will bring him out of the country on a military aircraft that is returning to Bangkok on Sunday afternoon.'

On Tuesday, a court in Burma, officially known as Myanmar, sentenced Ms Suu Kyi, who has spent 14 of the past 20 years in detention, to three years in jail.

The country's military rulers then reduced the sentence to 18 months house arrest at her lakeside home in Rangoon.

Ms Suu Kyi's extended house arrest means she will be locked up for elections promised in 2010.
