At least 46 people have been killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in northern India.

Three villages in the hilly Pithoragarh district, in the state of Uttarakhand, were swept away in the landslide after a cloudburst yesterday.

Local police say 17 bodies have so far been recovered.

Yesterday's rescue efforts by local emergency personnel and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police were hampered by bad weather, but a full-scale search has now resumed.
