A pilot was killed and seven passengers injured when a plane skidded off the runway as it landed on Thailand's resort island of Ko Samui and hit an old control tower.

The crash happened as the Bangkok Airways plane, which was carrying 68 passengers and four crew, attempted to land in rain.

'Five people have been seriously injured (already hospitalised), two people slightly injured, 61 safe, two crew safe, one pilot safe and one killed,' the airline said in a statement, listing all those on board.

This morning's flight was an internal one from the western town of Krabi, which is another popular tourist area in the Asian country.

Three Irish women were on board the flight, but escaped with only minor injuries.

Bangkok Airways flies three times a week between the two tourist spots using 70-seater planes.
