A couple in their 60s have died after their four-wheel drive was involved in a head-on collision with a van in Co Limerick.

The crash happened shortly before 6pm on the main road between Rathkeale and Askeaton.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her husband was brought to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where he later died.

Two men who were travelling in the van were also brought to hospital.

Their conditions are described as critical but stable.

Gardaí at Askeaton are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact them.
