Three people have died in separate road crashes in counties Monaghan and Roscommon, bringing to four the number of people who have died on the State’s roads in a 24 hour period.

A man was killed when his car crashed into a field at Ballydooley on the main Castlerea to Roscommon road at around 5.30pm.

The man, who was in his 20s, was taken to Roscommon County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In Monaghan, a man in his 40s died when his motorcycle was involved in a head-on collision with a car at Aghalisk, Clones Road at around 10.30am.

His body was removed to Louth County Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to contact them at Monaghan Garda Station on 047 77200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Elsewhere, a man in his 40s was killed when the lorry he was driving left the main Cootehill to Ballybay road at around 1.30pm.

A garda spokesperson said there were no other vehicles involved.

Meanwhile, A 37-year-old Donegal man was killed in a motorcycle crash on the Greek island of Kaphos.

The man was holidaying on the island when the crash occurred this morning.

Yesterday, a motorcyclist in his 30s was killed during a race event at Crossakiel in Co Meath.

A woman in her 50s is reported to be in a critical condition after a collision between the horse she was riding and a lorry in Co Cork this morning.

The incident happened at around 10am on the Fermoy to Ballyduff road.

The driver of the lorry was also taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable.
