Around 200 farmers have demonstrated outside Government Buildings over curbs on the Rural Environment Protection Scheme.

Members of the Government attended a Cabinet meeting this morning to discuss the report from ‘An Bord Snip Nua’ on cuts in the public service.

Irish Farmers' Association President Padraig Walshe said the Government cannot keep cutting payments to farmers because he said they did not create the current economic difficulties.

The IFA is angry over last week's announcement by the Minister for Agriculture to close off REPS to new entrants.

Some 62,000 farmers get an average of €6,200 a year for their participation in the Environmental Scheme.
