The total number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan stands at 184, higher than the 179 who lost their lives in Iraq.
Eight British soldiers were killed in Afghanistan in the space of 24 hours.
Six died yesterday, the others on Thursday.
The British Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Sir Jock Stirrup, said the Taliban was losing, but that the war against them would take time to win.
‘It is important that we also remember why our people are fighting in Afghanistan and what they are achieving through their sacrifice and their courage,’ he said.
