The Irish Medical Organisation has voted in favour of a Labour Court proposal that recommended that junior doctors accept the extension of the working day allowing to be rostered with no overtime.

86% of Non consultant hospital doctors voted in favour of the implementaton of the European Working Time Directive.

The Directive permits rostering over a longer working day and over weekends as part of moves to reduce their working week to 48 hours.

The Doctors have reiterated that all new working arrangements must prioritise patient safety and training for doctors.

The move is expected to save the Health Service Executive millions in overtime payments but may lower doctors' take-home pay.
