Basque separatist group ETA has claimed responsibility for five attacks carried out since the start of the year, including one aimed at killing police officers.

In a statement published in the Basque daily, Gara, ETA claimed responsibility for two booby-trapped bombs placed near a television tower in the Basque country on 16 January.

The bombs were designed to go off when police officers arriving at the scene triggered a trip line, but were instead discovered and defused.

ETA also claimed responsibility for a car bomb attack on 9 February in a Madrid business district that caused no injuries but extensive damage.

The blast went off in front of the Ferrovial construction company, which is building a high-speed rail line in the Basque country that ETA opposes.

And the group claimed responsibility for three other attacks, none of which caused injuries.

They were launched after police foiled a bid by ETA members to break out of a Spanish jail.
