Concern for jobs at BERU in Tralee

Workers at the BERU electronics plant in Tralee will have to wait for another few days before finding out whether they still have jobs.

A cost review comparing the Irish operation with a sister plant in Germany has been carried out.

It had been expected that the German glow-plug manufacturer would reveal today which operation would close.

However, workers summoned to a meeting this afternoon were told a decision has not yet been made.

Local management say they will brief workers as soon as they know the outcome which could be in the next day or two.

The company has been in the town since 1986.

Last April, it announced it was seeking 20 voluntary redundancies at the plant because of what it said was the continuing deteriorating economic conditions in the global car industry.

Workers have been on a three-day-week since last year.
