Nurses at Sligo General Hospital have staged a one-day strike over staffing levels at the hospital.

240 members of the Irish Nurses Organisation and SIPTU took part in the day of action.

Talks between the unions and management over staffing levels broke down last night without agreement.

A number of patients were transferred to other hospitals during the strike and a number of appointments and elective surgeries were also cancelled.

The Health Service Executive and hospital management criticised the move.

The HSE said that nurses put patient lives in danger by engaging in the strike.

Industrial Relations Officer with the INO Noel Treanor says nurses were forced to take action to secure better patient services.
