A powerful car bomb has exploded in northwest Baghdad killing 34 people and wounding 72.

The explosion happened in the Shula quarter in the northwest of the city.

Paramedics from Baghdad's Noor and Yarmuk hospitals confirmed the death toll.

The huge blast in the mainly Shia district comes after a recent downturn in attacks following a violent April.
