The headquarters of the EU Commission in Brussels was evacuated today because of a fire.

There are no reports of any injuries.

A fire brigade official said the blaze appeared to have started in the basement of the building.

Around eight fire engines attended the scene and smoke billowed from the roof of the Berlaymont building.

Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia and Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes were escorted out by security staff and police.
