Baghdad market bombing kills 10

A truck bomb has killed ten people and injured 37 others at a vegetable market in southern Baghdad.

The explosion took place in the mainly Sunni neighbourhood of Doura, which was once entirely controlled by al-Qaeda.

A rash of major bombings in recent weeks has raised questions about reported improvements in the security situation.

The bomb, planted in a pick-up truck, shook the mainly Sunni area of Doura at around 7am (5am Irish time), as merchants wound up the morning's delivery of goods from the countryside.

It is understood the bomber drove the truck into the al-Rasheed vegetable market, one of Baghdad's largest co-operative produce markets, parked it and left.

Police had found another pick-up truck with a bomb parked outside the market gate but a disposal unit safely detonated it.

Earlier this week, Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the recent violence was not likely to alter the plan to withdraw all US combat troops from Iraq late next summer.

Under a bilateral security pact, all US troops must leave by the end of 2011.
