Cork - Plans for toxic waste incinerator

The second oral hearing into plans by Indaver Ireland for a toxic waste incinerator in Cork harbour began this morning.

An Bord Pleanála has received 284 submissions on the company's plans for the €150m facility at Ringaskiddy.

Indaver Ireland first lodged plans for the facility eight years ago and despite the recommendations of its own inspector, An Bord Pleanála granted permission.

That permission has since expired because of the planning appeals process.

Indaver submitted a new application under the Strategic Infrastructure Act in December last year.

An Bord Pleanála opted to hold another oral hearing which is expected to last two weeks.

One of the submissions received is from CHASE (The Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safe Environment).

It has fought an eight-year campaign against the facility and the Department of the Environment.

Indaver says the facility is an essential piece of infrastructure.
