The association representing senior garda officers has said it is opposed to the Garda Ombudsman's attempt to seek changes in the law which would see gardaí investigating more complaints against gardaí.

The President of the Association of Garda Superintendents has said garda superintendents investigated almost 50% of complaints submitted to the Ombudsman and Supt Martin Shanahan said he did not think the public wanted gardaí investigating gardaí.

He was speaking at the association's annual conference which opened in Dublin today.

The conference also heard that superintendents are concerned about the numbers retiring and the moratorium on replacement.

11 of the 101 superintendents eligible to retire this year have left the force.

The conference heard there is a shortage of experienced officers to supervise rank-and-file gardaí, 43% of whom have less than five years experience in the force.
