Over €700,000 is to be spent by the Government to support and develop the teaching of Irish abroad in 2009.

Around 40 third-level colleges and universities in the US, Europe and further afield, are actively providing Irish language and Celtic Studies programmes within their own institutions.

The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív announced the funding today.

Founded in 2006, Ciste na Gaeilge's Subsidiary Fund for Third Level Institutions Overseas provides support to third-level institutions around the world to develop and promote these programmes.
