Taoiseach Brian Cowen has said the Government is seeking legal advice on whether it can retrospectively cut long-service increments for TDs and senators.
Speaking in Tullamore last night, Mr Cowen said new legislation would be prepared in the coming weeks.
He said it was important to ensure that the matter was dealt with in an appropriate and fair manner, taking into account the question of retrospective increments.
Mr Cowen said the decision had been outlined by the Minister for Finance in the supplementary Budget and was now being implemented.
