Repak is urging householders across Ireland to make an extra effort to recycle this Easter.
An additional 42,000 tonnes of waste is expected to be generated over the holiday period due, in part, to the almost 7m Easter eggs.
Repak said manufacturers have reduced their packaging by 25% and introduced ‘eco eggs’, which do not come in a box.
Easter egg packaging accounts for less than 2% of Easter-related waste.
It is expected that celebrations over the weekend will result in 42m drinks’ cans, 9m bottles of wine and 35m plastic drinks’ bottles being used, which is the equivalent of 31m litres of alcohol and soft drinks.
Repak is urging householders to make use of their recycling bins and to avail of bring banks and recycling centres.
