Around 70 protestors blocked traffic through Slane this morning to highlight their campaign to have heavy goods vehicles banned from the Co Meath village.

A number of those taking part had been in the recent multi-vehicle pile up that involved nine cars and trucks.

The protestors blocked the N2 and N51 roads for 15 minutes but then moved to the side to allow traffic through.

During that time, tailbacks of around 2km developed on the approaches to the village.

The residents say the bridge is the most dangerous in Europe, with 22 people dying in accidents either on it or on the steep approaches down to it.

They also said they will continue their campaign of disruption until the HGVs are banned or a by-pass is built.
