The board of Irish Nationwide has told the Government there will be a change of chief executive at the building society.
The development follows a meeting between Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan and the board this afternoon.
It is understood the board will report back to the Minister later this week on the discussions about reconstituting the board of the building society.
It is understood that current chief executive Michael Fingleton was not at this afternoon's meeting, as he is not a member of the board.
A spokesman for the Department of Finance said there had been a 'productive' meeting with the board of Irish Nationwide.
