The death has been announced of Nicky Fewer, Freeman of Waterford city.

The 60-year-old, who was a leading businessman in the southeast and chairperson of Waterford Airport, had been battling cancer.

Mr Fewer was the 31st person to be granted the Freedom of Waterford and established an architectural practice in the city in 1975.

His firm - Fewer Harrington & Partners - grew to become one of the largest in Ireland and his son Ian is now a partner in the practice.

Mr Fewer played a significant role in the task force that prepared the Vision 2011 report on the socio-economic situation in Waterford and the South-East for Mary Harney while she was Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment.

As well as being chairperson of Waterford Airport he was an honorary life member of Waterford Chamber.

Among his charitable work, was his chairing of the Harry Diegmann Education Trust which funds the third-level education of a number of Waterford students.

Again in a voluntary capacity, Mr Fewer - a keen sailor - chaired the organising team responsible for Waterford's multiple award-winning hosting of Tall Ships' Races 2005.

Mayor of Waterford Jack Walsh described Mr Fewer, as 'a driving force' and spoke of how the city and the wider southeast region will miss his energy, intelligence, wit and ability.
