New measures giving legal protection to whistleblowers in the health service come into effect today.
The legislation will ensure that employees who make disclosures in good faith and on reasonable grounds are protected from being penalised at work.
It will also guard them from being sued.
The measures are part of a number of initiatives aimed at improving patient safety which were announced by Minister for Health Mary Harney last month.
