Tens of thousands of workers are expected to take part in a protest in Dublin city centre tomorrow afternoon.

The protest, organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, is to highlight the impact of the recession on workers across the economy.

While the controversial pension levy for public servants has been receiving estensive publicity in recent weeks, ICTU says the march is also about private sector workers hit by unemployment and pay cuts.

Delegations from Waterford Crystal and SR Technics are also expected.

Gardaí say considerable traffic restrictions will be in place in Dublin city centre as result of the march which starts at Parnell Square at 2pm.

It will end at Merrion Square where an ICTU representative will address the crowd.

Gardaí say parking restrictions will be in place around Parnell Square and Merrion Square from 7am, while traffic will be restricted in both areas from 12pm onwards.

Roads will reopen as soon as the protest moves on from area.

General Secretary of ICTU David Begg has said that if 50,000 attend tomorrow's protest march it will send a resounding message to the Government that people do support the Congress's ten point plan for social solidarity.

A spokeswoman for the Government later said that the govt is always open to discussion with the social partners.

She added that the framework agreement, Towards 2016, remains in place and the framework for a pact agreed on 29 January could provide a context.

However, she said the Government position on the necessary €2bn adjustment in 2009 remains unchanged.
