Sit in staged at diamond firm

Element Six - Protest over short time working week

A sit in by workers at the Element Six diamond manufacturing plant at Shannon has ended.

The sit in began at the factory earlier today in a row over the introduction of short time working at the plant.

The company announced last December it is to lay off 150 of its 620 workers as part of a response to the global economic downturn.

As part of that response it also announced that it was introducing a week on week off system for some 200 staff.

Workers claim the short-time roster was being introduced in an unfair manner and that management grades were not subject to the same short time hours.

The company has now deferred the introduction of the new working hours due to begin next week and discussions with workers representatives will now take place.
