A suicide bomber has killed 27 people and injured 65 in an attack on a funeral procession in Pakistan.
It happened in the town of Dera Ismail Khan on the western bank of the Indus river close to the South Waziristan tribal region, where there is widespread support for the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
The funeral was that of Sher Zaman, a local Shia community leader shot dead yesterday in a busy market by unidentified gunmen riding on the back of a motorbike.
There has been ongoing violence between Shia and Sunni in the area.
Witnesses told police they had seen a motorcyclist drop off the bomber who then ran among the mourners before detonating the explosives strapped to his body.
Police said people enraged by the attack vented their anger by torching vehicles and ransacking shops. Gunfire also broke out briefly.
Authorities imposed a curfew and police and troops are now patrolling the town, 270km southwest of the capital, Islamabad.
