Senators in the United States say they have reached agreement on a massive economic recovery package.

The compromise comes after days of intense negotiations which trimmed more than $100bn from an earlier version.

Senior Democrats said that in order to gain Republican support, they will back a plan worth $780bn instead of the $900bn sought by US President Barack Obama.

The Senate is now due to hold a vote on the stimulus package in the coming days.

John McCain, the republican senator who was defeated by Mr Obama in last year's presidential election, said billions of dollars are being earmarked for programmes that would not create jobs.
