Dockers at Cork Port have accepted a redundancy deal offered by the company to rationalise working on the docks.

The dockers are part of the casual labour force at Cork Port.

The Port says in a statement that SIPTU has accepted the deal under the terms of a Labour Court agreement to modernise dock working.

The terms of the deal will result in 93 redundancies in the casual labour force and a radical change in the means and methods by which ships in the port are discharged and loaded.

The deal was negotiated under the aegis of Cork Cargo Handling Regulatory Company, a body which represents major stake holders in the port.

Negotiations have been going on for some years.

The deal was accepted under Labour Court recommendations in a vote by members of SIPTU's branch and expected to result in a major modernisation of work practices in the port.
