GE Healthcare has announced that 50 jobs will be lost at its plant in Carrigtwohill in Co Cork.
The IDA sponsored company will shed the jobs over the coming 12 months.
A spokesman for GE said staff members were told yesterday that demand for the products made at the plant had levelled off and 're-organisation was necessary'.
He said less than half of these layoffs would be forced redundancies.
The company currently employs between 450 and 500 people manufacturing medical diagnostic products for global distribution.
Recently a €15m expansion at the plant was completed.
