Afghanistan - US denies civilian deaths

The US military has denied a claim by a provincial Afghan official that 22 civilians were killed during a raid on the province of Laghman overnight.

The US says it killed 15 militants including one woman, during an operation targeting a Taliban commander.

The US military said it had no reports of civilian deaths at this point.

US military spokesman Colonel Greg Julian said. 'There was a ground operation targeting a Taliban commander. A number of militants manoeuvred on the force with small arms fire. Eleven militants were killed by small arms fire while 4 were killed by close air support.

'In an area where there was no threat to civilians, precision air weapons, not bombs, were used.'
